TSOCLIS Costas, Harpooned Fish, 1985, video projection, no sound 2,20×3,00m, Donated by the artist, 2017 National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST)

The question of realistic depiction arises constantly in Tsoclis’ work. The mixing of different artistic vocabularies and their fusion with natural materials together with sound, motion and hence also time, the combination of painting with technology – all this aims to engage viewers and make them participate in the work. This technique, which combined painting and video projection, was first seen in Harpooned Fish and became widely known after the artist’s participation in the 42nd Venice Biennale in 1986, whose main theme was the relationship between art and technology, creating a new genre: “live painting”.
