ANTONAKOS, Stephen Blue Inside Corner Neon, Glass Neon 1971, 243,84 x 71,12 cm, Courtesy of Stephen Antonakos Studio LLC, NY

Uniquely, Antonakos used neon for its own material and formal qualities — color, flexibility and engagement with the architecture and space of each site. He worked with geometric forms — no words, no images.  He called his work, “Real things in real spaces” and said, “…there is human meaning in basic abstract forms, in their specific proportions and placements.” He considered that it is up to the viewer to “complete” each work and interact with it according to his senses. Light becomes at once subject and material and the work turns into a living metaphysical space.
